The strategies mentioned above are not just theoretical concepts, but they are backed by scientific research that shows a strong correlation between physical fitness and mental health, particularly happiness. A large study involving more than 150,000 participants discovered that cardiorespiratory fitness and muscle strength independently contribute to better mental health. The research showed that participants with low combined cardiorespiratory fitness and muscle strength had significantly higher odds of experiencing depression and anxiety.

In this study, cardiorespiratory fitness was assessed by monitoring the participants' heart rate before, during, and after a 6-minute exercise test on a stationary bicycle. Muscle strength was measured using the volunteers' grip strength as a proxy. Seven years later, researchers found a significant correlation between the participants' initial physical fitness and their mental health, accounting for potential confounding factors such as age, previous mental health issues, smoking status, income level, physical activity, educational experience, and diet.

While this research does not definitively prove a causal relationship between physical fitness and better mental health, it does suggest a likely connection between the two. Further research is needed to understand the mechanisms behind this relationship. However, the findings underscore the importance and potential benefits of physical activity for mental health, supporting the strategies for boosting long-term happiness and strength that we've discussed.
